History of the Tournament
Freddie Thiel, pro at Riverdale Country Club from 1934 to 1975, believed highly in the mission of the Evans Scholars Foundation. As a result, Riverdale formed the Freddie Thiel 5-Man Scramble for Evans Scholarship in 1985. When Freddie passed away in 1994, the tournament was renamed the Freddie Thiel 5-Man Memorial Scramble for Evans Scholarship. Like his father Freddie, Tom Thiel, Riverdale pro from 1975 to 2002, also strongly supported the Evans Scholars Foundation. When Tom passed away in 2002, the tournament was again renamed The Thiel Memorial 5-Man Scramble for Evans Scholarship, to honor both Tom and Freddie. While the name of the tournament may have changed throughout its history, the success of the tournament has remained constant. Over the past 24 years, The Thiel Memorial Tournament has raised over $59,740.00 for the Western Golf Association's Evans Scholars Foundation. We look forward to another successful tournament in 2009!
